Compare-contrast essay writing

Whenever you have to pick a restaurant or a movie theater for going out, or which job to take - you are being involved in the process of comparing and contrasting. In college, students are asked to compare different characters from different stories or compare the ideas presented in different novels. By the same token, business-owners are also constantly in a position where they have to compare and contrast different options related to their on-job routine, such as evaluating which product logistics to deploy, which suppliers should be contracted, or which employees should be hired or fired.

To make you’re a compare and contrast essay efficient and up-to-the-point, consider using the following guidelines when writing your paper:

1. Make sure to compare subjects that have something in common. You cannot compare a butterfly and a bicycle, as those two objects lie in completely different categories. There should be  always a common foundation for comparison for you to deploy. In practical terms, it means that you can easily compare college athletes and high school athletes, but you will have a hard time trying to compare high school professors to high school athletes.

2. Identify a precise purpose that would be compatible you’re your context and your readers. Make sure your audience fully understands your reasoning and the topics you are discussing. For example, your purpose might be to collect data on the performance of two groups of athletes within different sets of conditions, or persuade the audience that the presidential campaign of Obama is stronger than that of McCain.

3. Use specific words to support your thesis. Do not say something general, like: “There are some differences between African and Australian mosquitoes”.  Instead, it would be better to say: “When flying, African and Australian mosquitoes use different natural navigation systems”.

4. Present the topic that would be interesting to the reader. For example, it would be boring for your audience to read about differences in high school and college education; generally, most people already know the basic differences between the two. Instead, it might be interesting to your audience to learn about difference in financing of high school and college sports.

5. Make your information structured and organized. Basically, you can structure your information by one of the three categories: a)differences and similarities, b)point by point, c)one subject at a time.
