Plagiarism detection tips for Professors: Cracking the cheaters psychologically.
Here you will find some tips of psychological warfare with the cheaters. Please note, while automatic plagiarism detection software does make mistakes and can be easily tricked by professional writers and students, psychological approach to cheating usually shows you immediate results.
As a professor you hold the ultimate power in class and by default students listen to you and treat your seriously. You need to capitalize on your advantages and act decisively. Just like cops prefer to elicit the criminal's good-faith confession rather than finding all the proofs and evidence, you should also prompt the cheaters to confess. But how can you do that if you do not really know who cheats?
Read some tips as shown below:
1. Innuendos. Those are simplest yet very powerful tools for cracking emotionally unstable cheaters. Basically you need in the presence of such students make comments which would disarm them and make uncertain about whether their plagiarized paper can go through. A good opening statement you should make in class is something like "Some students did much better than others..", "those who did not really spend their time researching ...will fail", "some really did not care about what I said..", "they could not write a paper on their own". While making such statements it is necessary to quickly scan the class and see how each student gets affected by what statements. After you single our several students who started to behave abnormally, you should go to the eye contact with them.
2. Eye contact (eye battle). While it is perfectly normal to make an eye contact with students and other poeple you are communicating with it is highly advisable to make an eye contact with cheaters after making an innuendo. If a student cheated she/he would feel uneasy and would immediately react with some. Again some students learn how to keep their composure, yet the majority of cheaters won't. This behavior which would certainly make police officer suspicious, should make you suspicous too. You should then proceed to looking for proofs and evidence of plagiarism.
3. "Getting friends" involves knowing as much as possible about your students. By becoming friends with your students you are likely to be an interesting professor and your students would not cheat. At the same time it gives you an understand of what this student does and whether or not she/he can cheat. Basically, if you know that student Kelly is a single mother you should be nice to her and ask her about her child. If you get something like "Oh, Professor, my son, Johny, was sick all weekend" you should say "I bet you spent all your time with the son. If i were you I would probably find no time for doing that term paper on my own. You are such a diligent student!" Then immediately look deep into her eyes and see whether or not she gets shocked. After all, at this very time she is very likely to plagiarize, because she has not time for writing papers.
Distractors that provoke plagiarism
When you become friends with students you learn about different distractors which at some time period can prompt them to plagiarize. This is when you need to show them your character and apprehend academic cheating:
1. girlfriends/boyfriends, spouses. They can certainly distract your students from doing their homework on their own. A romantic dinner a student had the day prior to handing in the paper almost always means that they hired a custom writing company.
2. children. When they get sick, tired, into trouble-their parents plagiarize.
3. Employment. Again students have to work and take a risk in plagiarizing the paper.
4. Community work. Same as employment.
5. Other classes. Some students can have a busy schedule with other classes. Learn about their other classes. If you know that Jack has 10 term papers due this weekend --he is probably going to order some of them. Your job is to find out if he plagiarized papers for your class or other classes.
Stereotypical picture of a cheater
1. Busy students. Those students work, do community service, volunteer and do zillion other things. It makes perfect sense for them to outsource some assignments so that they can have spare time for doing other things.
2. Below Average and failing students. If a student is about to fail the course, she/he has nothing to lose. Even if she/he gets caught plagiarizing he fails the class, if she/he does not plagiarize she/he will fail the class anyways. Plagairism gives them a chance.
